Kiasu

Morning, the clock is ticking slowly..urghhhh! it's Monday again. While on my way to the office i listened to Fly Fm and came across an interesting topic which are Kiasu. Well, the exact meaning of Kiasu (which taken from wikipedia) are :

Hokkien (a Chinese spoken variant) word that literally means 'fear of losing' (Mandarin Chinese: 怕輸). However its actual usage would imply a meaning more approaching that of "dog in a manger", and yet not quite.[citation needed] Examples of kiasu behaviour includes accumulating too much food on one's plate during a buffet lunch in case there is no more later, or joining a queue many days in advance just to ensure that one successfully gets hold of the limited free tickets to events, promotions and shows such as Singapore's annual National Day Parade.

This word is so widely used by Singaporeans and Malaysians that it is incorporated into their English vocabulary (in the form of Singlish). It is often used in describing the social attitudes of people, especially about South East Asian society and its values. Its widespread use is often because these attitudes are common—to not lose out in a highly competitive society (e.g. by above-cited examples), or to the extent of parents imposing heavy study labour on their children in their wish to make them at the very top of all other students. Growing up with this attitude, these students often become ambitious businesspeople, with the desire to be on top in wealth and prestige regardless of whether the most prestigious careers are aligned with their true capabilities.

Kiasu. Atau senang cerita hasad dengki. Tapi ada banyak jenis hasad dengki but i just sum up to two categories which are :

1) Healthy Competitive
2) Unhealthy Competitive

Let's go through example which are my experience using both of kiasu.

Healthy Competitive

Yang kita tahu healthy ni sihatkan, so bagi aku nak bersaing secara sehat ni bagus sebab at the same time kita boleh menunjukan credibility kita. Contohnya macam your work in one organization yang terdiri dengan banyak staff. Let say 40 orang, and you sometimes need to compete dengan the others sebab semua manusia sama, untuk membezakan kita ni lain atau tidak adalah dengan cara pemikiran dan juga how you manage and overcome the obstacle.

So bila bos bagi satu task and you need to compete with each other untuk menunjukkan credibility sendiri. no matter what and how, just do it as long as benda tu tak memudaratkan dan juga menyusahkan orang lain. It's the way you think and overcome problems and it will show how smart are u in handling the situation. Yang penting set otak tu yang you are compete in a healthy way, jangan pulak pegi hire tok pawang nak bomoh sipolan sipolan tu sbb dia lagi bagus dari ko. Itu nama cheating, kalau dah rasa ada orang lain lagi bagus, cuba tengok strength dia dan evaluate ape weakness ko then try to overcome it. bukannya susah pun, senang! we as human being are special because we got BRAIN!

Unhealthy competitive

kalau unhealthy ni berlambak, especially orang melayu. kita jaranglah tengok orang cina yang nak dengki-dengki dengan kaum dia sendiri, malah dieorang lagi nak tolong kaum dieorang supaya lagi maju. orang melayu je yang kuat hasad dengki ni. termasuk lah aku jugak, tak cakap pun aku ni baik sangatkan. sebab benda ni datang naturally, even kadang-kadang kita pun tak sedar yang sebenarnya kita dengki dengan orang tu. Contoh la yang biasa orang pompuan-pompuan ni,

sipolan A : eh cantiknya kulit muka dia..ko rasa dia pakai apa hah?

sipolan B : alah, botox la ape lg. setau aku dia tu hitam pastu muka karat-karat dulu.

sipolan A : eh, yeke? aku rasa aku nak buat jugak la. aku pun nak cantik mcm dia jugak.

sipolan B : tu la, aku pun nak buat so boleh lah kita jadi cantik mcm dia kan? kihkihkih *gelak pontianak*

benda mcm ni memang selalu pun kita dengar dalam perbualan seharian kita, especially perempuan yang keje office yang dah takde keje sangat pastu cari keje lain mengumpat. menyampah gila dengan orang macam ni. macam takde keje lain ke ko nak buat. banyak lagi la cerita yang aku go through tapi malas nak type. itu salah satu contoh yang paling senang nak paham la.

so orang-orang melayu (including me) move on! jangan nak duduk berpelesek ngumpat sana-sani, sekarang kita kena bergerak macam bullet train, bukan naik KTM yang kadang-kadang time pun boleh delay.
